“Immediate back pain relief”

What is the Kyphoplasty Procedure?

The Kyphoplasty procedure is designed to provide rapid pain relief. It is a minimally invasive procedure for patients who have chronic pain from vertebral compression fractures. Unfortunately, people who sustain compression fractures are often unaware and mistreat their pain. 50% of women and 25% of men will have an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. Once a vertebral compression fracture occurs, the risk of additional fractures in adjacent vertebrae increases 5-fold. Individuals often experience discomfort such as muscle spasms, lower or mid-back pain, and may also experience abdominal or chest pain. Doctors might recommend kyphoplasty for cancer-damaged vertebrae or certain spinal fractures. In most cases, a weakening of the bones (osteoporosis) has caused the vertebrae to compress or collapse, causing pain or a hunched posture.

  • Studies show that over 90% of patients who receive the Kyphoplasty procedure see dramatic pain relief immediately with significantly increased function including walking and performing activities of daily living.

How is the Kyphoplasty procedure done?

A Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that is minimally invasive. Generally, the procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If the patient has multiple spinal compression fractures that need to be treated at the same time, it would not be unusual for the procedure to take about one hour. Under fluoroscopy, catheters are inserted into the broken bone and a balloon is inflated in order to restore height in the vertebrae and create a cavity in the treated vertebrae. After the balloon is removed, bone cement is then injected into the newly created cavity. The bone cement stabilizes the break and provides pain relief along with increased function. With the process completed, an internal cast is now in place. This stabilizes the vertebral body and provides rapid mobility and pain relief.
