Tolerance can be easily defined as a person becoming “used of “ a drug. Over time patients can develop tolerance to both illicit drugs and prescription medications . For example, patients with chronic pain frequently develop tolerance to some effects of prescription pain medications without developing an addiction to them.
Dependence specifically refers to a physical condition in which the body has adapted to the presence of a drug. If an individual with drug dependence stops taking that drug suddenly, that person will experience predictable and measurable symptoms, known as a withdrawal syndrome. This is different than tolerance and addiction.
To the addicted brain, obtaining and taking drugs can literally feel like a matter of life and death. This is a dysfunctional behavior, is the result from the use or craving of a substance. In spite of harm to the patient’s health or relationships, they cannot control their use of this substance. The substance can vary from pain killers, “street drugs”, gambling, alcohol, etc. This means that sometimes the same dose of medication will produce a lesser effect because your body gets “used to it”. This is frequent with opioids (narcotics) but can also occur with other medications.
At Comprehensive Pain Management, we believe in an interdisciplinary approach.
We aim to help resolve all issues associated with pain and we understand that substance abuse and addiction can be as debilitating as pain itself. We offer a wide variety of substance abuse treatments including Suboxone, which been called a “blockbuster” medication with the potential to reduce symptoms of opiate addiction and withdrawal.
